Protection
Patrol dogs are dogs that have shown the self assertiveness to do the bite work and do their job
without being a loser. The protection work shows the dog's confidence to stand up to the most
dominate animal on earth, man. Hundreds of years ago dogs used to hunt and kill man. Over the
years, man has bred dogs to be our companions and not attack us. Now we have learned to channel
that fight drive to our advantage. I would like to make a clarification of the difference between
the attack dog and protection dog. A topic very few people know the differences in the training
methods to develop each of the two different dogs. First lets discuss the attack dog training
theory. This theory is a training that makes the dog a loser. The methods used are not to be
desired by the protection dog trainers. The dog is beat, poked, backed into a corner and made
to fight its way out, in self defense. This method doesn't allow the dog to be a winner. Also
this type of training the dog will not go a distance for a bite. If the distance it is sent is
too far from the K-9 handler the dog will stop before it gets to the suspect and will come back to its
handler. This gives the dog to much time to remember how it was trained. The beating and losing
in training may occur again on an attack over a distance. This type of trained dog will bite if
you come within its lead distance or in its territory. These types of dogs are neurotic biters,
sometimes at the wrong time. This is not the type of dog desired for police work. The time to
develop a strong protection dog starts as a puppy. The proper procedures in the process of development
start with the sack, then to the sleeve, followed by going to the person behind the equipment.
Proper training allows the protection phases to build more confidence to be more stable than that
of the attack dog that bites at anything close to it. There are many situations that you will
encounter that you pray the proper training prevails. There are going to be many situations where
the proper training of the protection phases will be very helpful. You are the leader. You are
expected to handle all situations of aggression and non-aggression.
